When your Katie’s tree arrives, the first thing you’ll want to do is to remove the cardboard trunk disc that is around the base of your new tree. The trunk disc helps to brace your tree during its delivery or shipping period, but it is no longer needed once your tree is in its new location.
The next thing to do is to check the drainage holes in the bottom of the container that your new tree has arrived in. Depending on your particular tree, a foil liner may have been inserted into the bottom of your tree’s container (our foil liners protect furniture and linens from soil and water if your tree is being displayed for a special occasion). If your tree’s container has a foil liner, be sure to poke holes into the foil liner prior to watering your tree (this can easily be done with the tip of a pen or pencil).
Next, touch the soil near the base of your new tree. If the soil feels a bit dry to the touch, then it’s time to water your new tree. Water your new tree thoroughly during each watering session as this will assure that your tree’s root system will grow downward and not remain near the surface of your container. Until you get a good feel for your particular tree’s watering needs, watering twice a week should be a good interval to begin with (if your tree is inside your home or building). If you have transplanted your new tree into the ground outdoors, you may want to water your tree every other day to begin with (as the sun and wind may cause the need for more frequent watering sessions).
